Val D\'Orcia - Landscapes Photo - Tuscany

Explore the Cities and Towns of Tuscany

Overview

The Val D'Orcia is without a doubt one of the most beautiful regions in Tuscany and also one of the most authentic.  Many tourists never arrive here, despite the fact that it is a UNESCO world heritage site, the setting for the film the English Patient and Under the Tuscany Sun, many people coming to Tuscany don't know what the Orcia Valley is and where in other Tuscan regions, village traditions have long since disappeared, they are perpetuated here in this incredible and expansive valley.. The economy of Val D'Orcia is still based on agriculture, with the inhabitants closely connected to the land and its produce.

This is a marvelous landscape of hills, fields, and streams, with rich clay and tufa soils, similar to the Sienese landscape which enchanted painters, writers and travelers alike. The people of the Val D'Orcia area have resisted the pressures of progress and retained the traditions of the region, particularly that of hospitality, which was offered to visitors particularly during the time the great pilgrimages.

Gorgeous villages dot the hill-tops here, including: Castelmuzio, Castiglione D'Orcia, Montefollonico, Monte Oliveto, Montichiello, Petrolio, Radicofoni and Bagno Vignoni, the most popular of which of course are Pienza, Montepulciano and Montalcino where we have a few day tours departing from Florence and Siena going - the others are to be savored during a longer stay on your own, in simple silence. You can read about all of these villages on the Tuscany section of our website under destinations and or write us for any questions about this area.

The Church of St Anna, the Church of St Antimo and the Church of Spedaletto are all beautiful and to be enjoyed at a leisurely rate. There are many routes to be followed on foot or on bike. The most important event has to be the Festival of Val D'Orcia which happens in September and makes for a wonderful end-to-summer event where local products including the Pecorino cheese are show-cased as well as the various wines from the region.

Fantastico!  Io ci credo! - I believe so! heartheartheart
