Overview
This celebrated 17th-century island garden floats like a galleon on the waters of Lake Maggiore, its great pyramid of terraces rising at the southern end to mimic a vessel's flat-topped stern. That this effect was intended can be deduced from Marc'Antonio dal Re's early 18th-century engraving, which includes the never-completed north of the island, extended to form a pointed prow.
