Overview
Ponza is one of the most beautiful islands in the Mediterranean, part of a larger achipelago of islands - the Pontine islands - a national park in the region of Lazio. It's easily accessible from Rome, but few travelers to Italy ever hear about it and Thank God because if peoiple found out about this place it would soon become over-run with the masses of tourists and cruise passengers that now flood Capri causing the cost of a coffee to be over 5 Euro! No way, not here on Ponza. You can still savour an espresso in a beautiful bay with all the colourful houses that surround you for under 50 cents!
The pontine islands offer not only incredible geology and landscapes - the islands are comprised of two groups: around Ponza, the largest, lie Palmarola, Zannone and Gavi; whilst at roughly 20 miles away there is Ventotene and, close by, Santo Stefano. Only two of the islands are inhabited throughout the year: those of Ponza and Ventotene.
With its picturesque villages and gorgeous beaches, Ventotene is a charming holiday destination and an affirmed favourite with scuba divers. In addition to the island's many natural wonders, Ventotene conserves a number of traces of its ancient Roman past. The two largest islands are linked to the mainland by a frequent ferry service.
