The entire historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, yet the city feels relaxed and lived-in rather than overrun. Verona is compact, walkable, and full of atmosphere. In a single day you can stand inside an arena built almost 2,000 years ago, sip an aperitivo in a square that was once the Roman forum, and watch the sunset from a hilltop above terracotta rooftops. It is also a natural base for exploring Lake Garda and the Valpolicella wine region, both about 30 minutes away.
Top Things to Do in Verona
Most of the main sights sit within the old town, so you can see them comfortably on foot.
- Arena di Verona: A Roman amphitheater from the first century AD that is still in use today. In summer it hosts a world-famous open-air opera festival.
- Juliet's House: The courtyard of the Casa di Giulietta, with its famous balcony and bronze statue, is the most visited spot in the city. Go early to avoid the crowds.
- Piazza delle Erbe: The liveliest square in Verona, lined with frescoed buildings, market stalls, and cafes. Climb the nearby Torre dei Lamberti for a view over the city.
- Castelvecchio and the Scaliger Bridge: A 14th-century fortress with a fine art museum and a red brick bridge across the Adige.
- Ponte Pietra and Castel San Pietro: Cross the oldest bridge in Verona, then walk or ride the funicular up to the best panoramic viewpoint in town.
- Basilica of San Zeno: A masterpiece of Romanesque architecture with bronze doors and an altarpiece by Mantegna.
- Giardino Giusti: A peaceful Renaissance garden with cypress avenues and terraces.
Food and Wine in Verona
Verona is a city for people who love to eat and drink well. Local menus feature risotto all'Amarone, fresh bigoli pasta, and gnocchi, and the city is the birthplace of pandoro, the golden Christmas cake. The surrounding hills produce some of the best-known wines in Italy, including Amarone, Valpolicella, and Soave. A half-day winery visit with a tasting is one of the most popular additions to a Verona itinerary.
Best Time to Visit Verona
Spring and early autumn bring mild weather and comfortable sightseeing. The opera season runs from June to September, and an evening performance in the Arena under the stars is unforgettable, so book tickets well in advance. December brings Christmas markets and festive lights. Hotels fill quickly during the Vinitaly wine fair in spring, so check the dates before you book.
How to Get to Verona
Verona is easy to reach by train. From Verona Porta Nuova station, high-speed trains connect to Venice and Milan in about 1 hour 15 minutes, Bologna in under an hour, and Florence in about 1 hour 30 minutes. The historic center is a 15 to 20 minute walk or a short taxi ride from the station. Verona also has its own airport, and travelers with a private driver can combine the city with Lake Garda, the Dolomites, or the wine country in one trip.
How Long Should You Stay?
One full day covers the main sights, but two nights lets you enjoy the city in the evening, when day visitors have left, and add a trip to Lake Garda or a Valpolicella winery. Verona also works well as a stop between Venice and Milan or on the way north to the Dolomites.
