Overview
Villa Carlotta is the most famous of all the villas on Lake Como. Almost directly across the lake from Bellagio, the villa is located on the western shore of the lake between the towns of Tremezzo and Cadenabbia.
This property is an incredible site to behold with the mountains, soaring to the skies as the back-drop and a series of terraces which go down to the shores of the lake.
This most romantic landscape was largely the creation of a German prince the Duke of Saxe-Meiningen, whose wife, Charlotte of Prussia was given the villa in 1850 as a wedding present from her mother. Princess Charlotte died in childbirth at twenty-four. Her widower, Duke George, a passionate botanist, oversaw the extravagant transformation of the park, adding large numbers of botanical exotics to the already existing collection of rhododendrons and azaleas. Shrubs, climbers and brightly colored perennials were planted in lush profusion. In summer, to follow the winding paths leading horizontally across the garden is to venture into an exotic, tropical world filled with orchids, ferns, cacti, yuccas and succulents.
Open from mid-March until November, Villa Carlotta attracts over 150,000 visitors a year. Its gardens, as well as being botanically varied, are immaculately kept. In summer the hedges are clipped every two to four weeks and a gardner on permanent duty with a leaf-blower ensures that not a stray leaf is out of place.
Villa Carlotta is definitely the paradise of every garden lover!
