Overview
Santa Maria di Leuca is located at the southernmost tip of the Salento peninsula in the Puglia region where the waters of the Adriatic and Ionian seas merge. and the town has played an important role historically in the area over many centuries. Virgil, the poet himself wrote about it in his 3rd book of the Aeneid.
He describes here the hero's approach to the Japigo promontory, home to Leuca.... referring of course to Santa Maria di Leuca.
Today, the town is a white-washed port, and popular resort town and offers some spectacular views over the the two seas where villas, hotels and resorts dot the coast.
This is one of the stops we make along our full-day experiences through the Salento region where we enjoy the spectacular scenery of the Salento region.
