Overview
Martina Franca is the largest town in the Itria Valley and one of the most elegant. In the 14th century residents of the town were exempt from taxation, which encouraged wealthy businessmen to move here and invest in the town, including the construction of numerous churches.
Although much of the ancient walls have been destroyed as the town expanded, the old gates are still there to show you when you are entering the historic center. Wander the narrow streets towards the center of the town to see Palazzo Ducale and the beauitful Baroque Basilica San Martino, before doing as the locals do, settling down in a bar with a glass of wine to enjoy a restful sunny afternoon.
If you are lucky enough to be there in the summer months, don't miss the Festival of the Itria Valley, an Italian opera festival now in its 46th year.
