This is a resort town frequented by many locals who come to enjoy the spectacular setting of the town as well as the thermal spring waters which the town is famous for known as the 'Terme" and many spa-hotels are located here. The waters are said to have many healing properties and in fact this part of northern Italy is particularly famous the world over for the wonderful health and wellness retreats that are found all over the area.
The town itself is also very interesting and dates back thousands of years. A medieval castle greets visitors who must pass through it to enter the town known as the Rocca Scaligera. It dates back to medieval times and overlooks the lake.
Sirmione is also famous for the Archaeological Site of the 'Grotte di Catullo' which encompasses a Roman villa, a museum and many olive trees which produce fine olive oil the town is also famous for.
Just below the ruins is the rocky 'Jamaica Beach' which is a popular summer beach resort with locals from the area where they have outdoor lounges great 'al fresco' dining. Most all hotels here are located on the water with docks which jut into the lake and during the summer months many come to enjoy swimming in the beautiful lake and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of this wonderful town.
