It is known for the architectural legacy of the Renaissance Gonzaga rulers, who built the impressive Ducal Palace and the entire historical centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site for its impressive artistic, cultural and musical mastery. It is noted for its signficant role in the the history of opera.

The Gonzagas family also built the 'Te Palace', known for the Chamber of the Giants, where every surface is painted with mythological scenes. This is the palace where the Italian composer Monteverdi premiered his opera L'Orfeo and where Romeo was banished in Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet.
