Gerace, Calabria

Gerace is one of the most impressive towns in the Calabria region of Italy.  With striking 365 degree views over the immense valleys and coast, this town is on our list of the most beautiful villages in Italy and definitely a stop you do not want to miss when visiting Calabria.  

The city's coast of arms contains the image of a raptor, 'hiferax' in Greek, recalling a legend of how the refugees from the coast first came to settle here.  In fact, the city dates back thousands of years and over time has grown very rich in terms of both power and impressive cultural and artistic works which can all be found here.

Guided tours of course are available, though what is most impressive about this town are the magnificent views, the wonderful historical center, the impressive piazzas (central squares), which can easily be discovered by taking a walk through the center.  

There is ample parking when you arrive to the height of the town, driving all the way up to the Norman castle as we did and then walking down to the main center will lead to a wonderful bar, gelateria where you can enjoy granita and wonderful Calabrese hospitality.

in the most southern part of Calabria, this is a town you do not want to miss when traveling through, for it will never cease to surprise even the most well-traveled among us.
