Overview
Amantea is a beach town located in the province of Cosenza in Italy's most southern mainland region of Calabria. It's a coastal resort town with a very interesting historical center built on the incredible cliff formations that rise behind the coast where the sea-level once reached.
It has an extremely attractive old Centre on a hill over the contemporary town and a significant lot of beach. Off the main tourist trail, Amantea is a pleasant town to visit for a concise exploration, a short stay on the route south, or a tranquil and lightening up holidays.
This town has a lot of history, which you can read on http://www.visitsitaly.com/calabria/amantea/index.htm
The town itself makes for an attractive base for day trips, particularly for those wishing to visit relatives in Rende, Cosenza and other villages where many descendants of Calabrese heritage came from. There were over 3 million Calabrese who left Italy in the great migration to North America, Australia, Brazil and many other places in the 'new worlds' beyond Europe.
There is lots to discover in this area and it is easy to access via Lamezia Terme airport internationally and more laid back and less expensive than other more popular resort towns like Tropea further south.
