It is both a major city in the region of Italy as well as a Province in the region of Campania.

Because of its close proximity, only 100 miles northeast of Naples into the mountains, it is an important centre in this region situated on a hill 130 metres above sea level at the confluence of the Calore Irpino and the Sabato. It is also the seat of a Roman Catholic archbisho.
