Melfi, Basilicata with Italy Vacation Specialists

Explore the Cities and Towns of Basilicata

Overview

Melfi is a surprisingly delightful city located in the region of Basilicata in southern Italy.  It is located on a hill at the foot of Mount Vulture and is the most important city in the Vulture region.

The town is dominated by the Castle of Melfi, which is one of the most important medieval castles in southern Italy.  It dates back to the Norman conquest however it has undergone several changes overtime and Emperor Frederick II gave great importance to ensuring its fortification.

It was here, where the constitution of Melfi which governed the Kingdom of Sicily was promulgated which would govern Southern Italy for centuries.

A visit to Melfi would not be complete without going in the castle, where they have artifacts that span the ages well preserved inside and this is a town you most certainly do not want to miss on your journey through southern Italy.  Not only for the castle and the history of Melfi, but also because the town is stunningly beautiful and very elegant.
