Overview
The Monticchio lakes are of volcanic origin and lie in the Vulture region of Basilicata on the border of Campania. It is a popular get-a-way with locals in the area. There are several fantastic dining opportunities surrounding the lakes as well boating options.
It's a spectacular setting with tall trees surrounding the lake, deep blue waters and the impressive San Michele abbey which is a Benedictine Abbey located at the foot of Mount Vulture.
The abbey was founded in the 10th century and created around grottoes carved into a rock cliff. There is evidence of worship here from the 3rd to 4th century of the modern era.
The veneration of St. Michael archangel was developed by the Italian and Greek monks at the site, who were then replaced by the Benedictines who then constructed the abbey.
Today, it is an impressive and beautiful site to worship with spectacular views over the valley and a wonderful prayer area inside which the public is welcome to attend.
