Overview
Starting from your hotel located in the center of Milan, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the city to visit some of its most famous monuments.
You will begin by visiting Milan's most prominent church, the Duomo, located in the Piazza del Duomo. Although Oscar Wilde once called it 'an awful failure', the incredible marble-faced cathedral is dedicated to St. Ambrose, the city's patron saint. St. Ambrose, who was once Bishop of Milan, famously excommunicated the emperor Theodosius. Your guide will tell you about the cathedral's construction, which began in the 14th century and continued for several centuries until the facade was finished in time for Napoleon's coronation as 'King of Italy' in 1805. Once inside, your guide will highlight some of the great artistic and historical heritage housed in the cathedral.
After visiting the Duomo, you will stroll through the famous Galleria Vittorio Emanuele shopping arcade, where you can observe fashionable Milanese residents checking out the designer stores covered by magnificent 19th-century glass and iron domes and vaults.
On the other side of the shopping arcade is La Scala, Italy's most famous opera house. Your guide will talk to you about the history of the building, which was built as a replacement for the previous opera house that had burned down in the late 18th century. Although you won't be going inside, La Scala has been one of the most prestigious places in Milan since its inception, attracting opera stars from around the world for the season that opens each year on the Feast of St. Ambrose.
Your guide will then take you through the Brera district, which is known as the city's artistic heart. Today, it is still home to many artisans, as well as the Brera art gallery.
Finally, you will come to Sempione Park and the Sforza Castle. The Sforza family held the title of Duke of Milan throughout the 15th and 16th centuries and built the castle into a fortress designed in part by Leonardo da Vinci.
