Overview

Charles of Borbon, ruler of the Kingdom of Naples, inherited the famed Farnese Collection from his mother, Elisabetta Farnese.  The powerful Farnese had amassed an impressive collection to adorn Palazzo Farnese in Rome, thanks to family-member Pope Paul III, whose influence allowed him to acquire pieces from some of Rome's most important sites.   Charles moved part of the collection from Parma to Naples and his son, Ferdinand, moved the rest from Rome.

The tour will begin with the impressive sculptures that were taken from the Baths of Caracalla in Rome, including the so-called Farnese Hercules and the Farnese Bull, the largest single sculpture to have survived from antiquity.

The museum also contains many artifacts and paintings from Pompeii, giving visitors who are also visiting the ruined city, a better idea of what it once looked like.  Your guide will show you some of the most important mosaics and frescoes, discussing the insight they give us into life in the 1st century AD.
