Description
The Royal Palace of Caserta was built by the Spanish Bourbons, who ruled the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies from Naples in the 18th century.
Charles VII of Naples wanted a place to escape the chaos and violence of the city and the recent discovery of the buried city of Herculaneum influenced his decision to be out of reach of Vesuvius, should it erupt again.
The palace was modeled after Versailles, with the aim of creating a Royal palace that was fit for a king, but could also house his court, government and soldiers.
The day will begin with a private transfer from your hotel in Naples or Sorrento. At the palace, a registered guide will be waiting to show you the building, the Royal apartments and part of the gardens (the park covers 120 hectares in total). Following the tour, continue in the gardens alone, or foot or by shuttle bus, to visit the fountains and English Garden.
