The baths of Caracalla are located at the foot of the Aventine hill. These famous baths were built by Emperor Septimius Severus in 206 AD and completed by his son Caracalla in 217 AD. The baths were in use until the 6th century when the Goths destroyed the city's aqueduct. In ancient , going to the baths was a social event of the day. Large complexes like the Caracalla could accommodate up to 1,500 bathers and offered a wide range of facilities, including gardens, libraries, art galleries, gymnasiums, conference and lecture rooms, shops, public restaurants, bars, and cafes. The Roman bath was a long and complicated process, starting with a Turkish bath, followed by a spell in the Calidarium, a large hot room with pools of water to moisten the atmosphere. Many visitors find visiting the baths fascinating because of the well-preserved site that brings to life the vast cultural heritage of Roman society.
