Overview
Sperlonga is a picturesque town set on the west coast of the Lazio region, about 1 hour south of Rome.
The dramatically set historic center of the town is set overlooking the marvellous clear blue sea, these the characteristics which make Sperlonga one of the most loved tourist destinations of Lazio's Circeo. Here, the seabed is a diver's paradise: habitat for numerous species of marine life and littered with interesting archaeological findings.
Once the summer residence of the aristocratic classes of ancient Rome, and important imperial fishing port, Sperlonga is scattered with the traces of its illustrious past, such as the ruins of the Villa di Tiberio which descend all the way to the Grotta di Tiberio. A National Archaeological Museum has been recently opened so as to house the thousands of ancient artefacts discovered in the area.
Stacked up on the rocks, directly above the sea, the medieval town of Sperlonga is a veritable labyrinth of little lanes, picturesque arches, and panoramic terraces overlooking the sea and the promontory of the Circeo. An intricate series of steps lead the visitor down to the sea edge.
The shores of Sperlonga have something for everyone, from the dramatically beautiful Angolo beach, nestling amidst the rocks, to the soft sandy beach of Canzatore, this latter served by numerous bathing establishments, bars and restaurants.
