Campania

Chapter 1 · Days 1–4

Welcome to Campania

The region of Campania on the south-west coast of Italy is home to one of the world's most famous and most beautiful coastlines - the Amalfi Coast. This spectacular area draws hundreds of thousands of visitors each year to enjoy the mildness of the climate, the exotic vegetation of palms, lemon and orange trees and the remarkable sandstone cliffs which…

Day 1

Positano

positano Arrival in Positano Upon your arrival in Positano you check into your sea view room at the Hotel Villa Franca. With its commanding position over the town and sea, this family-owned hotel has the feel of an elegant private villa reflecting the Mediterranean architectural style of white walls, painted tiled, lacquered terracotta, and stone accents from Mt. Vesuvius. The warmth of Southern Italian hospitality soon takes hold as you settle in and begin to explore Positano on your own. One of the Amalfi Coast’s best known towns, Positano is situated at the mouth of a splendid gorge that gradually widens as it moves towards the sea. Originally a small fishing village, Positano’s characteristic houses, cubes of white, pink, red, orange, almost all with a small porch in front, some with a spherical dome, spiral down the narrow streets of the hillside to the port, interspersed with palm trees, trailing bougainvillea, and terraced citrus groves. Featuring in many films such as “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” the waterfront is a colorful bustle of fishing and pleasure boats and beach loungers and parasols. Dinner is on your own this evening in one of Positano’s many fine restaurants or trattorias. A list of recommended restaurants is available for dining ideas. Hotel Villa Franca Positano, Italy An elegant and welcoming four-star hotel with striking views of the sea and Positano. Reflecting local architectural style, spacious sea-view guest rooms and common spaces in white contrast with terracotta, painted tile, lush gardens, and terraces, and a rooftop pool with a 360-degree view of Positano. In addition to fine dining al fresco and a poolside bar, the hotel also has a fitness area and spa facilities (massage and Turkish steam bath). A complimentary room upgrade (pending availability) can be requested on arrival.

Amalfi Coast Drive; independent explorations of the towns of Amalfi and Ravello This morning, after breakfast in your hotel, you embark on an ideal introduction to one of Italy’s most beautiful coastlines—the Amalfi Coast—with your local expert driver. One of the world’s most scenic drives is enhanced by the sheer vibe of the Amalfi Coast—the perfume of lemons, the people, the sunshine, the contrast of blue sea, sky, and striking white cliffs. Amalfi, the first stop of the day, approximately 30 minutes drive from Positano, is one of the most famous towns along this coastline. Also situated at the mouth of a ravine, surrounded by striking cliffs, the seaside resort town has a long history and was a powerful maritime republic in the Middle Ages. In the heart of the town overlooking the main square is its 11th-century Arab-Norman style cathedral. Inside is the 12th-century white-columned “Cloister of Paradise.” A very short drive up brings you to the beautiful town of Ravello, perched high above Amalfi, with its privileged views over the entire coast. A gem, Ravello has been a magnet for artists and writers stretching from Boccaccio to Truman Capote. Stroll its narrow lanes and squares, with enticing boutiques and pastry shops—some of the region’s best dolce or sweets can be found here. A highlight is the evocative 13th-century Villa Rufolo, an inspiration to the operas of Richard Wagner, with its stunning Moorish-style courtyard, villa, gardens, and breathtaking views of the coast. Returning to Positano in the later afternoon, you are free to stroll into town, relax at the beach or poolside at your hotel before dinner on your own.

Excursion to the Isle of Capri, via hydrofoil boat from Amalfi

A full day excursion with a local expert guide to the Isle of Capri provides a comprehensive picture of the entire Amalfi Coast and Bay of Naples. You are transferred from your hotel to the port of Amalfi where you board a scheduled hydrofoil (high-speed ferry) whisking you across the waters around the tip of the Sorrentine Peninsula to the Marina Grande, Capri’s main port. A short stroll brings you to Capri’s funicular that climbs in minutes to the main square of the town of Capri. Its white-washed arches, domes, narrow streets, and squares blend into the island’s scenery and invite exploration. Later, you climb into one of Capri’s typical convertible taxis to drive to the island’s upper town of Anacapri. Like its “rival” of Capri below, Anacapri is elegant, but perhaps simpler in feel with its Moorish architecture and surrounding vineyards and olive groves. Sites to visit are the Piazza San Nicola and its 18th-century church of San Michele, and the Swedish writer Axel Munthe’s tranquil Villa San Michele. For a more active adventure, there is a chairlift to the summit of Monte Solaro, the highest point on the island with its truly stupendous views over the island, sea, and the mainland. This full day concludes as your guide leads you back by hydrofoil to Amalfi and your transfer to your hotel in Positano, where you are free to enjoy the remainder of the evening.

Traveler Reviews

Emily and David Davison Travelled with us

My husband and I just took a two week trip to Italy that was planned for us by Eleanor Kinchin-Smith. It was a fantastic trip and we could not have been more thrilled. We worked together with Ele to let her know about our interests and our style of travel. She planned the perfect trip with excellent private guides at all of our sites, professional drivers and lovely hotels. We arrived in Italy with all of our train and ferry reservations made by Ele, with tickets in hand. She was in touch with us daily throughout our trip to make sure that things were going smoothly. She was able to make a few changes to our itinerary as needed. We look forward to working with Ele again on our next trip and have put her in touch with another family member to help plan their trip as well.

Dear Guiseppe and Jesse,

We just returned from our most wonderful vacation to Italy and wanted to first thank you for putting together such a wonderful trip, and second to provide some feedback for the future.

Hotels

1. Hotel Sovestro in San Gimignano was wonderful. The staff were very friendly and helpful and made the first portion of our journey very stress free. They made us feel like we were part of their family. I would recommend it to anyone and would specifically ask for it if we were to make a return visit.

2. Hotel La Baia in Monterosso was nice and it's location was very good especially for us older folks humping luggage from/to the train station.

3. Hotel Lucchesi in Florence- what can I say expect FANTASTIC. The rooftop view at sunset is well worth it. Again very friendly and helpful staff. Would recommend it to everyone.

Wine Tour

Money well spent. We had a great time overall. The driver Mario was OUTSTANDING. He had lots of local knowledge as well as about winemaking. USE HIM AGAIN!!!

The various wineries we visited on tour:

Altesino- fantastic and they were not cheap on their pouring. Great experience.

Azienda Agricola Patrizia Cencion Sloaria- Again a great tour by one of the owner's daughters. We felt like we were the only thing on their mind although there were other customers there. A great way to complete the day.

Again we had a fantastic time and are very appreciative of everything you booked for us. We wish you continued success and if our travels should bring us back to Italy, we know who to call.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a private tour, or will we join a group?

Private. You travel with your own guide and driver, and the only people on the itinerary are the ones you bring with you. Nothing is shared with strangers, and the pace of each day is yours to set.

Can the itinerary be changed to suit us?

Yes. What you see here is a starting point, not a fixed departure. Tell us how long you have, what you love and what you would rather skip, and we will reshape it around you. A slower morning, an extra night somewhere you fell for, a different region entirely.

How do we start planning?

Send us a note using the form on this page, or call us on 1-866-779-2565. A travel specialist replies within one business day, usually with a few questions of their own. There is no cost and no obligation in asking.

When should we book?

The earlier the better, particularly for travel between May and September, when the best small hotels and the guides worth having are taken first. That said, we have put together beautiful trips at short notice, so ask and we will tell you honestly what is still possible for your dates.
