There are places in Italy that announce themselves immediately, and others that ask you to pay attention. Città di Castello is one of those places.
Set in the Upper Tiber Valley, in northern Umbria, where the landscape begins to lean toward Tuscany, Città di Castello remains refreshingly removed from the rhythms of mass tourism. Renaissance palaces, medieval streets and hidden gardens mingle with cafés, bicycles, small shops and the everyday life of a town that has never stopped belonging to the people who live here.
Its story reaches back to Roman Tifernum Tiberinum, although much of the Città di Castello we see today was shaped during the Renaissance, particularly under the influence of the powerful Vitelli family. Their legacy remains in the elegant palaces, churches and courtyards scattered throughout the historic centre.
Among the loveliest is Palazzo Vitelli alla Cannoniera, today home to the Pinacoteca Comunale. Behind its remarkable façade are frescoed rooms and works by some of the great names of Italian art, including Raphael and Luca Signorelli. Outside, its formal gardens offer a quieter kind of beauty, a place to linger before returning to the streets of the old town.
From the Renaissance to Alberto Burri
And then Città di Castello takes an unexpected turn.
Alberto Burri, one of Italy's most important twentieth-century artists, was born here in 1915. His work can be discovered at Palazzo Albizzini and, most dramatically, at the Ex Seccatoi del Tabacco, vast former tobacco-drying warehouses transformed into extraordinary spaces for his monumental works.
There is something wonderfully fitting about this transformation. Buildings once devoted to agriculture have been given another life through art, just as Burri found beauty and possibility in materials others might have overlooked: burlap, wood, iron and plastic.
Perhaps this is part of what makes Città di Castello so compelling. The Renaissance and the modern world do not compete for attention here. They simply exist alongside one another.
Exploring Città di Castello and the Upper Tiber Valley
Beyond the town, the Upper Tiber Valley unfolds into a beautiful landscape of wooded hills, olive groves, medieval villages and quiet country roads. This northern corner of Umbria is particularly rewarding for travellers who enjoy discovering places where history, nature and everyday life remain closely intertwined.
Among the loveliest nearby destinations are Citerna, a beautifully preserved hilltop village overlooking the valley, Montone, with its narrow medieval streets and ancient stone houses, and Monte Santa Maria Tiberina, a small hilltop settlement offering sweeping views across the surrounding countryside.
Just north of Città di Castello, San Giustino is home to the remarkable Castello Bufalini, a Renaissance residence celebrated for its frescoes and historic gardens. Continuing south, Umbertide offers a picturesque riverside setting and an imposing medieval fortress, while Pietralunga, surrounded by the wooded hills of the Apennines, retains the quiet character of rural Umbria.
Farther afield, the magnificent medieval town of Gubbio, with its dramatic hillside setting and imposing Palazzo dei Consoli, is among the region's great architectural treasures. Perugia, Umbria's historic capital, offers another fascinating dimension, with its Etruscan heritage, Renaissance art and lively cultural atmosphere.
Across the nearby Tuscan border, Sansepolcro, birthplace of the Renaissance painter Piero della Francesca, and the beautifully preserved medieval town of Anghiari are equally worthwhile discoveries.
Together, these destinations make Città di Castello a wonderful starting point for exploring one of central Italy's most culturally rich and surprisingly overlooked landscapes.
Discovering Città di Castello
Much of the pleasure of Città di Castello lies in wandering without urgency. Beneath its porticoes and along its old streets are frescoes, gardens, churches, workshops and small details easily missed when travelling too quickly. The places that stay with us are not always the famous ones. Sometimes it is a garden you hadn't expected to find, a fresco above your head, a bicycle passing through an ancient street, or an old tobacco warehouse filled with extraordinary art.
Città di Castello is that kind of place. It doesn't demand your attention, but if you give it some, it gives a great deal back.
