Overview

Castelluccio di Norcia is a village in the region of Umbria located in the Appenine mountains, which is the mountain chain which runs through all of central Italy.  It is situated at  1452 m, making it the highest settlement in the Apennines.

The village itself is located above the "Great Plain" (Piano Grande - 1270 m), next to the Monti Sibillini National Park and is said to date back to 13th century or even slightly earlier, and is thought to have been settled by the Romans.

Rain and meltwater accumulate on the surface of the plain, which is made of largely impermeable sediments. The greenish ditches drain the water towards openings called Ponors, which are part of the karstic underground drainage system. If the karst drainage is blocked for any reason, water backs up and turns the plain into a temporary lake.

This is an incredible area of Italy to visit, making for excellent photographs.  The roads are challenging getting up here, however it is well worth it and we highly recommend this experience.
