San Miniato, Tuscany

Experience the very best of San Miniato, Tuscany

Explore the Cities and Towns of Tuscany

Overview

San Miniato is a pretty, yet lesser known hilltop town if we are to compare it to some of it's other Tuscan counterparts. It's small, yet charming historical centre is certainly worth a visit or stop off if traveling between Pisa and Florence.
Historically it was a strategic look out point, across the Tuscan plaines towards the then merchant ports of Livorno and Pisa. It was also, and still is today one of the towns along the route of the famous "Via Francigena", the pilgrims' road that led from Canterbury, UK right down to Rome. In San Miniato ,there are still points and signs indicating trails along this route for modern pilgrims who still embark on this journey.

The main square of the small town is Piazza della Republica or also known as Piazza del Seminario, which dates back to medieval times. Today this square hosts local markets and festivals, most famously the internationally renowned "Mostra & Mercato del Tartuffo Bianco" or the White Truffle festival which takes place every Fall. As the name suggests local suppliers put on their seasonal displays of the truffles that have been forrigged by the "tartufaio" or truffle hunters and their dogs. Of course there is an opportunity to purchase these prestigious finds often at record breaking prices, and plenty of  gastronomic stands  that offer tastings and dishes using this regional delicacy.
