Overview
Amalfi Town is one of the most photographed destinations on the planet, as is the Amalfi Coast. The region takes its name after this town. Yet, few travelers who come to the Amalfi Coast are ever here for more than a few hours, for Amalfi was one of the most important maritime republics in Europe between 839 and 1200. At the time it was known as 'Duchy of Amalfi'
All types of goods from North Africa and the East would come in and out of Amalfi, making it an incredibly wealthy city at the time.
Today, it welcomes cruise ship travelers during the day, but its usually very quiet in the evenings after 5 PM, when it's a great time to visit the town and explore its labyrinth of tiny streets, small cafes and even the local way of life, which still remains relatively untouched despite the tourists during the day.
