Explore the fascinating history and traditions of stunning Siena with the help of a knowledgeable local guide.

Your tour will commence at the stunning Piazza del Campo. This shell-shaped square is considered one of the best-preserved medieval spaces in Europe, boasting the Palazzo Pubblico, Torre del Mangia, and Fonte Gaia. Every year, locals and visitors alike gather in the square for the famous Palio di Siena. During your visit, you will learn about the town's contrade, which are the 17 districts that compete in the Palio. You can still see their colors and symbols as you explore Siena, particularly during the summer months of July and August when the Palio takes place.

As you stroll along the medieval streets that branch out from the piazza, you'll uncover the connection between the mythical foundations of Rome and Siena and discover why the city's colors are black and white.

One of the most breathtaking sights in Siena is the Gothic cathedral, which was built in the city's colors and decorated with exquisitely crafted sculptures and mosaics. Inside, you can marvel at the remarkable pavement, featuring the Murder of the Innocents and the symbols of Siena and her allies. The cathedral is also home to the Piccolomini Library, which, although not containing many books, is a treasure trove of artistic heritage in the form of frescoes adorning the walls. The library is named after the family of Pope Pius II, and the artist Pinturrichio created the paintings depicting episodes from his life.

During your journey through the city, you will learn more about Siena and its remarkable history, including the world's oldest bank, which has its headquarters here, and one of Europe's earliest hospitals.
