Overview
A private transfer is available from Bologna for guests who want to visit Ravenna for a day. If you're staying in the city, your guide will meet you at your hotel reception. The guide will take you through the narrow streets of Ravenna and show you different sites listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Ravenna is a small town that is easy to explore on foot.
The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia is the earliest and best-preserved mosaic site. It dates back to the 5th century and is covered with bright mosaics that depict the triumph of life over death. It was built for Galla Placidia, who was the daughter of one emperor and sister, wife, and mother to three others.
Nearby is the Basilica of San Vitale, which dates to the mid-sixth century and has the best-preserved Byzantine mosaics outside of Constantinople. The mosaics depict both the emperor, Justinian I, and his wife, the Empress Theodora.
The Baptistry of Neon, the oldest architectural structure in Ravenna, is located near the city's cathedral. The central mosaic of the baptismal font shows the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist in the River Jordan. The Archbishop's Chapel, located in the Bishop's Palace, is the only surviving private oratory from the Early Christian period.
The Arian Baptistery, built under Theoderic the Great, is another surviving baptistry. It was constructed for the Arian Christians who lived in the city during Theoderic's reign. The central mosaic depicts the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan with a greater use of gold than in the earlier counterpart.
The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo was constructed at around the same time but was later reconstructed and rededicated when the Arian faith was suppressed. The wall mosaics include representations of the port at Classe and the palace of Theoderic the Great. The Mausoleum of Theoderic, located outside the town, is recognized for its purely Gothic style of architecture but lacks any decoration.
The tour can be extended to visit the last of the 8 Early Christian sites outside the town at the former port of Classe. Here, the mosaics emphasize the fight against the Arian faith and the belief that Christ was both human and divine.
