Ortisei: One of Our Favorite Bases in the Dolomites

Ortisei is one of our favorite towns in the Dolomites and, in our opinion, one of the best places to base yourself while exploring this extraordinary mountain region. Set in beautiful Val Gardena, it combines spectacular scenery with excellent hotels, restaurants, cafés and shops, while putting some of the most memorable experiences in the Dolomites within remarkably easy reach.

One of the experiences we particularly love is heading up into the mountains above Ortisei toward Mont Sëuc and the magnificent Alpe di Siusi. This vast alpine landscape is simply glorious, with green meadows stretching beneath the dramatic Dolomite peaks and walking trails that can be enjoyed by almost everyone.

You do not need to be a serious hiker to appreciate it. There are easy trails that are wonderful for families and children, with horses, cattle and goats grazing in the surrounding meadows. You can walk for an hour, spend half a day exploring, or simply wander until you find a beautiful mountain hut or restaurant where you can stop for lunch and take in the views. One of the places we enjoy is Mont Sëuc Restaurant, set in an absolutely spectacular position overlooking the surrounding mountains and valley.

For us, this is one of those experiences you simply should not bypass when visiting the Dolomites. There is something wonderful about spending the day walking through the mountains, stopping for a long lunch in an alpine hut, watching animals grazing in the meadows and allowing yourself to slow down and simply enjoy where you are.

Then there is Ortisei itself. After a day in the mountains, you return to a beautiful, welcoming town filled with restaurants, cafés, boutiques and local life. You can walk through the center, have an aperitivo, enjoy dinner and wake up the following morning surrounded once again by some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Italy.

That combination is precisely why we return to Ortisei again and again when designing our Dolomites journeys. It allows you to experience the mountains without having to rough it, and to be active without needing to be an experienced mountaineer.

For couples, families and active travelers in particular, Ortisei offers something very special: the opportunity not simply to see the Dolomites, but to slow down, spend a few days among them and truly experience mountain life.
