Overview

Tindari is home to one of the most spectacular monasteries in Sicily that is situated on a spectacular mountain position overlooking the gorgeous coastline below. It is famous all over Italy as being home to the Black Madonna which is of Byzantine origin. Legend has it that it was being sailed from Constantinople to Rome, when a storm suddenly hit and the ship had to pull into Tindari port, below the abbey where she now sits behind the magnificent altar with the inscription 'nigro sum sed formosa' - (Black am I, but beautiful).

This is definitely an incredible stop to make while visiting Sicily and can easily be done from Palermo or can be visited en-route between Taormina and Palermo on Sicily's north-east coast.
