Overview

The town of Castellammere del Golfo is located about 1 hour south of Palermo in the region of south western Sicily

The name Castellammare di Golfo (Casteddammari in Sicilian)is roughly translated as "Sea Fortress of the Gulf." It is so named because of the medieval fortress overlooking the anonymously named harbor.

The harbour has been in constant use from time immemorial, serving the people of nearby Terme di Segesta, location of a thermal spa which was settled by the Elymian people who inhabited the area  prior to the time of the ancient Greeks who dominated the Island from 700 BC until the time of the Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans who came to control it until the Roman empire collapsed in the 5th century AD.

Fishing has been important in Castellammare del Golfo dating back to ancient times. Today the town's economy continues to be based on fishing and tourism.

Castellammare del Golfo is deeply representative of Sicily.  First and foremost the town is one of the most  beautiful towns on Sicily's western Coast, close to the city of Trapani which the Sicilian Mafia still uses as its primary port for the shipping of heroin to North America.

Unlike Trapani, which is a large city and sea port, Castellammare del Golfo is a tidy and well-kept town with charming  boutiques and amiable sea-food restaurants, all bustling with activity in the summer months especially.  The town and its sparkling white sand beaches sit in the middle of the National Nature Reserve of Scopello, protected from the usual depredations of mankind.

This Castellammare di Golfo recently gained international fame as a tourist destination because one of the last scenes in the Hollywood blockbuster "Ocean's 12"  was shot in a nearby bay (left side, second photograph).  Because major celebrities like Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta Jones have stayed for several months, drawn to the area's beauty and charm - the area has quickly become an inspot for the "glitteroti".

Castellammare di Golfo has a dark history too, a sweet town that is the birthplace of many Sicilian and  American mafia bosses including Salvatore Maranzano, Joseph Bonanno, Joseph Ristuccia, Michael Monte and  and hundreds of other "Men of Honour".

Indeed, one of the bloodiest of all American Mafia wars was named the From this name comes also the Castellamarese war, fought by a clan led by Joe Masseria clan against another clan led by Salvatore Maranzano each vying for the domination of the Mafia in New York city.

Although the Mafia remains un=expunged in Sicily, it no longer has the immense power it once had, and the modern traveler will feel no threat in Castellammare del Golfo.  Quite the contrary: the town and its environs are a great place for a beach holiday and a place that can serve as a wonderful starting and/or ending place for a vacation in Sicily

“In August 2018, my family of four and myself travelled from Vancouver, BC to Rome Italy and spent 3 weeks touring Italy with IVS. This company had come highly recommended by many friends and associates of ours who had used them before and indeed to say they do an outstanding job is an understatement. You can tell while being in Italy that it is one complicated place to run tours in, just by the sh”

“I have traveled to Italy 2x with the IVS for my own pleasure trips and 2x for business with IVS. These guys really pay attention and make your trip go like clockwork. Italy is nuts, just saying! There are so many rules and restrictions now, so we did not want to drive ourselves. Having traveled with them many times and done business on several occasions, most definitely USE this company. They know”

“In September of 2018 I brought a group of 12 from Venice to Sicily and organized all of my services with the Italy Vacation Specialists. Being a travel agent and in the business, I know how complicated organizing travel arrangements can be in Italy and the IVS team took a huge burden off of me! I would like to start of by saying "THANK YOU" both for the amazing job you did on our trip. There was n”

“I went to high school with the owner of the company who organized my honeymoon for myself and my now wife from Tokyo. We spent three short weeks seeing Piedmont and experiencing wine paradise there, then heading to Nice in France with our private driver and flying to Rome where honestly 4 days is NOT enough. They keep saying to spend more time and we could not agree more! You need to spend more ti”

“As a travel agent, but also a traveler to Italy, thee is no other company I would recommend than the Italy Vacation Specialists. Not only do they really care about what they are doing, they also really know Italy and try to educate many people about ways they can best see the country and not fall into tourist traps. “This company really knows their stuff and recommended our family to stay longer in each location. We didn't listen to them, but wished we had in every single place we went. They recommended Sestri Levante over the Cinque Terre which was our favourite destination on our entire trip. We visited Rome where we stayed in the outstanding Hotel Locorno where they know the owner there, like in every place”
