UNA Hotels Capotaormina is a 4-star hotel built into the rocky promontory of Capo Taormina, a few kilometres below the historic centre of Taormina on Sicily's Ionian coast. The hotel occupies the tip of the headland south of the town, with the sea on three sides and views across the Bay of Naxos to Isola Bella and, on clear days, the outline of Mount Etna.
The property's signature feature is the saltwater swimming pool set into the cliff at the water's edge, surrounded by sun terraces and reached from the hotel through the rock. A private beach lies at the foot of the promontory, with sunbeds and umbrellas sheltered beneath a natural rock arch and a beach bar open through the middle of the day. A complimentary shuttle connects the hotel with the centre of Taormina on scheduled days and times.
Accommodation is arranged in seven categories, from Superior and Deluxe rooms with private balconies over the garden or the sea, through the recently renovated Premium Sea View, Premium Garden View and Prestige rooms, to Junior Suites with a separate sitting area and Suites with a large terrace facing Isola Bella. All rooms feature air conditioning, complimentary Wi-Fi, 55-inch Smart TVs, minibars, safes, coffee machines and walk-in wardrobes, and selected rooms are accessible to guests with reduced mobility.
Dining is spread across two restaurants and three bars. Le Grand Bleu, made famous by the Luc Besson film of the same name, serves lunch and dinner on a terrace above the sea looking towards Giardini Naxos and Etna, while Aura is dedicated to traditional Sicilian cuisine at dinner. Breakfast is a continental buffet with Sicilian specialities, and drinks are served at Bar L'Approdo beside the saltwater pool and at Bar Svevo, for a mid-morning coffee or a sunset aperitivo.
Guests can use the fitness centre, with advice from a personal trainer, and the hotel's beauty centre, which offers massages and anti-stress treatments. The hotel also hosts weddings, ceremonies on the beach and conferences in fully equipped meeting rooms, and holds ISO 50001 certification for responsible energy management.
Taormina's centre is about 6 km away, Taormina-Giardini railway station 15 km, and both Catania Fontanarossa airport and Messina around 50 km. Check-in is from 14:00 and check-out by 12:00. A paid private garage near the hotel is available by arrangement, and airport transfers can be organised on request.

In our own words
Why we personally recommend it
Taormina is one of the most beautiful towns in Italy, and one of the hardest to stay in if what you want is the sea. The town sits high on its hill; the water is a cable car or a taxi ride away. Capotaormina solves that. The hotel stands on its own headland a few kilometres below the town, with the Ionian on three sides, a pool filled with seawater at the foot of the cliff and a private beach under a natural rock arch. Isola Bella is right there across the bay, and on a clear morning Etna rises behind Giardini Naxos with a thread of smoke at the summit.
After twenty-five years of living in Italy we have learned to judge a hotel by its ordinary days rather than its brochure. Here breakfast is properly Sicilian, the free shuttle takes the driving to town out of the equation, and the recently renovated Premium, Prestige and Suite categories have given the rooms the calm, well-made feel the setting deserves. Le Grand Bleu, on its rock above the water, is a place we send people for dinner even when they are not staying.
It is a resort hotel, with the size and the meeting rooms that go with that, so we recommend it to couples and families who want a week based on the sea with Taormina within easy reach, rather than to guests looking for a small boutique address in the old town. Ask us which side of the building to request; the sea side is worth it.

What we arrange for you
Private transfers with Drivers in Italy
Catania Fontanarossa airport is about 50 km away, and the coast road into Taormina is not a drive to do tired after a flight. Our own chauffeur company, Drivers in Italy, meets you at the airport, the port of Messina or Taormina-Giardini station and brings you straight to the hotel. The same driver can take you to Siracusa, Noto or the Etna villages for the day.
The best view of the hotel is from the sea. A private boat collects you nearby for a slow morning along the coast of Taormina, with time to swim in the coves below Isola Bella and the grottoes of Capo Sant'Andrea before lunch. We arrange the boat, the skipper and the timing around your day.
Etna is less than an hour from the hotel and the volcano's northern slopes grow some of the most interesting wines in Italy. We send a driver-guide for the day: the Silvestri craters, a walk on the lava fields, then tastings and a long lunch at a family winery before you are back in time for a swim.
The rooms here range from garden-view Superior rooms to Suites with a terrace facing Isola Bella, and the difference matters more than the price list suggests. Tell us who is travelling and how you like to spend your mornings, and we will ask the hotel for the room, the floor and the side of the building that suit you.
On the rocky headland of Capo Taormina, on the coast road about 6 km below the historic centre of Taormina, at Via Nazionale 105. The hotel has the sea on three sides, with Isola Bella across the bay and Giardini Naxos to the south. Catania airport and Messina are both around 50 km away.
Can we swim in the sea from the hotel?
Yes. A saltwater pool is built into the rocks at the water's edge and a private beach with sunbeds and umbrellas lies at the foot of the promontory, beneath a natural rock arch. Both are reached from the hotel by lift through the rock.
How do we get into Taormina?
The hotel runs a complimentary shuttle to the centre of Taormina on scheduled days and times. A taxi takes about 15 minutes. If you would rather not think about it at all, we can arrange a private driver for the day.
Which room should we choose?
Superior and Deluxe rooms are the classic categories, with balconies on the garden or the sea side. Premium Sea View, Premium Garden View and Prestige rooms were recently renovated, with walk-in showers and a lighter, Sicilian feel. Junior Suites add a sitting area and Suites a large terrace facing Isola Bella. Ask us and we will match the room to your trip.
Where can we eat at the hotel?
Le Grand Bleu, on its own rock above the water, serves lunch and dinner and takes its name from the Luc Besson film shot here. Aura is open for dinner and is dedicated to traditional Sicilian cooking. Breakfast is a continental buffet with Sicilian specialities, and there are three bars: L'Approdo by the pool, Bar Svevo indoors and a bar on the beach.
Is the hotel suitable for guests with reduced mobility?
Partly. There are lifts inside the hotel and down to the beach, and some rooms are adapted for guests with reduced mobility. The headland itself is steep, so tell us who is travelling and we will check the details with the hotel.
What are the check-in and check-out times?
Check-in from 14:00 and check-out by 12:00. Early arrival or late departure can be requested, subject to availability.
