Overview
This is a truly fascinating journey back through time that pre-dates the Greeks, Romans and most known civilizations as we explore the Sesi, which are truly extraordinary megalithic constructions in the area of รขโฌโนรขโฌโนMursia and Cimillia on the island of Pantelleria.
On this excursion, we explore a north-African population who about 5,000 years ago settled on Pantelleria to invade south-western Europe. These were men dedicated to hunting and farming. They built enormous villages made up of small houses, defended by extensive walls. The strategic position of Pantelleria, even thousands of years ago, allowed for extensive trade between Sicily and the African continent.
The term 'sese' in Pantelleria indicates a 'pile of stones'. Thanks to the archeological expedition led by Paolo Orsione towards the end of the 19th century it was possible to establish with certainty that these are sepulchral monuments; in fact, many buried with their respective funerary equipment were found inside.
The Sesi are therefore megalithic constructions , similar to the Sardinian Nuraghi. They are truncated cone structures, with an elliptical or circular plan, a walkway was created for the construction to allow the passage of the blocks as they proceeded in height, often surmounted by a conical dome, which has to them the nickname of "funeral domes". They were erected outside the village walls, not on high ground, but on flatter areas.
Over the day, you will have a chance to visit the Amphitheatre, the incredible tunnels, various temples and gain incredible insight into this impressive world which was so critical to Sicily and Europe as we know it today.
Nothing beats seeing these places through the eyes of a local and all of our guides speak perfect English!
