Marseille is a beautiful port city in southern France and occupies a stunning coastline. It is also home to one of the most impressive cathedrals in Europe the Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde which a Romanesque-Byzantine church, set high upon the moutain at the southern end of the port with impressive 360 degree views.

Marseille is a vibrant and exciting city, mostly because it has been a crossroads of immigration and trade since its founding by the Greeks circa 600 B.C. At its heart is the Vieux-Port (Old Port), where fishmongers sell their catch along the boat-lined quay and fantastic markets abound with local specialities and hand-made french productds from the Provence region which is only 45 minutes from Marseille.

Modern landmarks include Le Corbusier’s influential Cité Radieuse complex and Zaha Hadid’s CMA CGM Tower which are fun to visit, however just taking a walk through the city and venturing up to the cathedral, exploring the various gardens, wonderful parks and various neighbourhoods, is unto itself a fantastic way to spend a few days or even a week, using Marseille as a base to experirence this incredible region in France.
