Italy Summer 2026: What Travelers Need To Know Before They Arrive

Facebook and Blog TITLE BANNER

Italy is one of the most beautiful countries in Europe. It is renowned throughout the world for its incredible food, wine, culture, architecture, fashion, and stunning landscapes, making it one of theย world’s most rewarding destinations. Yet, we know first hand what summer travel in Italy really looks like and it is not always as simple as the photographs make it appear.

After more than two decades living and working in Italy, one thing has become increasingly clear: the travelers who enjoy Italy the most are usually the ones who arrive with realistic expectations.

The good news is that Italy is still extraordinary. The food is incredible, the landscapes remain breathtaking, and the experiences available today are as memorable as ever.

The challenge is that Italy has become more popular than at any point in recent memory.

If you are planning to visit Italy during the summer of 2026, here are some important things you should know before you arrive.

Expect Higher Temperatures & Possible Heat Waves

Summer in Italy can be hot. Very hot. (Read our article:ย What to do in Rome during a heat wave)

In recent years, temperatures of 35โ€“40ยฐC (95โ€“104ยฐF) have become increasingly common across much of the country, particularly in cities such as Rome, Florence, Naples, and inland regions of Sicily and Puglia.

Many first-time visitors underestimate how exhausting sightseeing can become during the hottest hours of the day.

Our recommendations are simple:

  • Start early.
  • Schedule indoor attractions during the afternoon.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Allow time for long lunches, beach breaks, or pool time.
  • Avoid over-scheduling your days.
  • Try to book a hotel with a pool, terrace or garden
  • Make dinner reservations after 20:00 PM

The travelers who enjoy Italy the most often embrace the slower pace that Italians themselves adopt during the summer months.

Popular Destinations in Italy Are More Crowded Than Ever

Italy’s popularity continues to grow and places such as Rome, Venice, Florence, Positano, Capri, Taormina, Cinque Terre, and Lake Como will be extremely busy throughout much of June, July, and August.

This does not mean you should avoid them, it simply means you should plan accordingly.

Many travelers arrive expecting a quiet village atmosphere and are surprised to discover long lines, crowded piazzas, and fully booked restaurants.

Whenever possible make sure to:ย

  • Reserve major attractions in advance.
  • Book accommodations early.
  • Consider staying longer in fewer destinations.
  • Explore lesser-known areas nearby.

Some of our favorite experiences in Italy happen just outside the most famous locations.

Transportation Strikes Are A Reality In Italy

This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of traveling in Italy.

Strikes can affect:

  • Trains
  • Airports
  • Public transportation
  • Ferries
  • Ground handling services

Most strikes are announced in advance and many services continue to operate during protected hours.

However, they can still create disruptions.

Our advice is not to panic.

Instead:

  • Monitor official transportation announcements.
  • Build some flexibility into your itinerary.
  • Avoid making extremely tight connections.
  • Work with local professionals who can help adjust plans when necessary.

Italy works differently than many visitors expect, and flexibility is often rewarded.

Ferry & Boating Services Are Wonderful, But Weather Matters

Many travelers plan their vacations around ferry routes connecting destinations such as:

  • Capri
  • Ischia
  • Procida
  • Positano
  • Amalfi
  • Sicily’s islands
  • The Venetian Lagoon

Ferries are often one of the most enjoyable ways to travel, however, they are also dependent on weather and sea conditions. Strong winds and rough seas can occasionally lead to delays or cancellations.

When building an itinerary, it is wise to avoid scheduling critical international flights immediately after ferry transfers whenever possible.

Beach Clubs & Beaches in Italy are not Free & Often Require Advance Reservations

One of the biggest surprises for visitors is discovering that many beaches in Italy operate through private beach clubs.

In popular destinations, the best locations may sell out days or even weeks in advance.

This is particularly true in:

  • Sardinia
  • Sicily
  • Amalfi Coast
  • Tuscany
  • Puglia
  • Liguria

If having a reserved umbrella and sunbed is important to your experience, do not assume availability.

Book ahead whenever possible.

Tourist Taxes Continue To Increase

Many municipalities across Italy charge a local tourist tax.

The amount varies depending on:

  • The destination
  • The category of accommodation
  • The season

While the tax is generally not significant compared to the overall cost of a vacation, it often surprises travelers who were unaware of it when budgeting.

Always verify whether tourist taxes are included in your accommodation quote.

Restaurant Reservations Are More Important Than Ever

The days of simply showing up at the most popular restaurants are largely gone during peak summer months.

If there is a restaurant you truly want to experience, reserve it.

Particularly in destinations such as:

  • Rome
  • Florence
  • Venice
  • Positano
  • Capri
  • Taormina
  • Lake Como

The best tables often disappear well in advance.

Many visitors are surprised to learn that securing a reservation at a sought-after restaurant can sometimes be more difficult than booking a hotel room.

The Biggest Advice We Can Offer

After helping travelers navigate Italy for more than 25 years, we have learned that successful trips rarely come from trying to see everything.

They come from slowing down. Read our article, “What Slow Travel Really Means”ย  Choose fewer destinations.

Allow time for unexpected discoveries and try to build flexibility into your plans.

Accept that Italy is not always predictable.

That unpredictability is often part of its charm.

Italy remains one of the most extraordinary countries in the world to explore. The travelers who enjoy it most are usually the ones who arrive informed, prepared, and willing to embrace the experience as it unfolds.

Planning a trip to Italy has never been easier,ย  but planning theย rightย trip to Italy has never been more difficult.

Graphic for Blog

Italy looks beautiful online. Experiencing it successfully often comes down to local insight, real-world experience, and having the right people in your corner.

Today, travelers have access to endless websites, AI-generated itineraries, social media recommendations, booking platforms, and travel forums. The challenge is no longer finding information. The challenge is knowing which information actually applies to your trip.

At Italy Vacation Specialists, we are not simply a travel agency selling hotels and tours from behind a desk thousands of miles away.

We live here.

Our team works throughout Italy year-round, with firsthand knowledge of destinations, hotels, transportation networks, local suppliers, seasonal changes, and the countless details that can transform a good trip into an extraordinary one.

For more than 25 years, we have been helping travelers navigate Italy’s complexities with confidence.

We know which hotels have the best locations, not just the highest review scores. We know which destinations are worth the journey and which are often oversold online.

We know how long transfers actually take, how ferries operate during peak season, which experiences are worth reserving months in advance, and how to adapt when unexpected challenges arise.

Most importantly, when something does not go according to plan, you are not left dealing with it alone.

Our team is already here.

Italy is a country that rewards local knowledge. A beautiful hotel can be in the wrong location. A highly rated villa may not offer the experience you imagined. A simple transfer can become stressful when transportation schedules change or local conditions shift.

These are the details that rarely appear in guidebooks, travel blogs, or online reviews.

They are also the details that often define the success of a vacation.

Whether you are dreaming of the Amalfi Coast, Sicily, Tuscany, Venice, Lake Garda, Puglia, Calabria, or a custom journey that combines several regions, our role is simple:

To help you experience Italy more smoothly, more authentically, and with the confidence that comes from having a trusted team on the ground.

Ready to Plan Your Italy Journey?

Before you book another hotel, reserve another tour, or rely on another online recommendation, take a few minutes to speak with someone who is actually here. Talk with a real human being, on the ground in Italy, who understands the destinations, logistics, seasonal realities, and hidden details that can make or break a trip.

Whether you’re planning your first visit to Italy, a family vacation, a luxury getaway, a villa stay, or a complex multi-region itinerary, our team is here to help you make informed decisions before you spend your valuable time and money.

Schedule a complimentary 15-minute consultation with one of our local Italy travel experts today.

No fees. No obligation. Just practical advice from people who live and work in Italy year-round.

Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

At Italy Vacation Specialists, we believe travel should be more than a checklist of destinations. It should inspire, surprise, and leave you with memories that endure long after the journey ends.

Allow our award-winning team on the ground in Italy to help craft an experience that is uniquely yours.

Because the most valuable souvenirs are not the things we bring home, but the moments we never forget.
