If you have decided to drive in Italy and you don’t have an EU driving license, you’ll need to get an International Driving Permit before you can rent a car or drive in Italy.

What is an International Driving Permit?

An International Driving Permit allows you to use your driving license around the world.  It is recognized in 174 countries and provides a translation of your driving licence into 9 foreign languages.

While you are in Italy, you must carry both your driving license and International Driving Permit when renting or driving a vehicle.

Where can I get an International Driving Permit?

In the US, you need to contact AAA (American Automobile Association), NAC (National Automobile Club) or AATA (American Automobile Touring Alliance), while in Canada they are issued by the CAA (Canadian Automobile Association).

$15-20

Applying for the permit

You must be at least 18 to apply for an IDP

You must have a driving licence in your home country

Your licence must be valid for at least 6 months from the date the IDP is issued

Each IDP is valid for 1 year

An application should take around 2 weeks to process, so apply at least a month before your trip to be safe.
