Overview

Powerful and silent like its mountains, intellectual and reserved like its middle-European influences, pure and wild like its landscapes, and proud like those who throughout history have lived in these borderlands. This geographically, historically and politically complex border region of Friuli-Venezia-Giulia has been invaded from every direction by almost every bellicose population imaginable over the centuries. The results are what make up a land populated by ‘Friulani’, a multi-national populace of towns with a plurality noted in its cuisine, language, architectural styles and even the look of its population.

Fruili is a region of Italy where vineyards, castles abbeys and sophisticated city centers give way to a natural wonderland of magnifcent mountains and pristine coastline. It has often been described as "The Tuscany of the north", but without the crowds. Here the cuisne is world class and the wines are surprisingly top rate. The array of easily accessible activities are endless. One can bask in the sun or swim at one of the many beaches along its rugged coastline, explore its wineries and wine taste, visit one of the many castles, explore its Roman archaeological sites and picturesque fishing villages, or enjoy a remote alpine chalets that offers hikes along dramatic snowtop ridges. The elegant Hapsburg city of Trieste, its regional capital, and is the ideal place from where to head in to the Carso, a territory punctuated with karst caves, the largest of which is the 107m deep Grotta Gigante. So much to discover in a region few hardly know exisit.
