It’s no doubt that Italy has been hit hard by Covid-19. Yet the country is rebounding and proving to be stronger than ever. What we’re seeing now is locals ready to showcase the most authentic and unique experiences the country has to offer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

An agriturismo is simply a farm house or a farm stay, most often family run. There are many types throughout Italy, including ones on a vineyard or olive grove, set amidst well cared for animals, home to a luxurious spa and relaxing pool, or often a combination. What is standard, though, is fresh and local food, spacious countryside, and a deep dive into the local culture.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

We consider agriturismi<\/em> one of Italy’s best kept secrets as many international travelers have never heard of or stayed in one.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Why stay in an agriturismo?<\/strong><\/h5>\r\n

Italy is long renowned for its incredible food, wine and stunning landscapes. From north to south along the Italian peninsula run some of the world’s most dramatic coastlines, valleys and mountain ranges. For such a small country, Italy offers more geographic diversity than many others.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Because of Italy’s unique position in the Mediterranean, historic and modern agriculture have successfully contributed in creating some of the finest wines and most sought after food. For example, truffle, or tartufo<\/em>, and the famous Mozzarella di Buffala or Balsamic Vinegar. All of these require a unique biosphere and attentive care. In short, uniquely and exquisitely Italian. Hence, a well-rounded trip to Italy includes tasting as many of these local delicacies as possible. Tough job, right?<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Italians themselves also frequently use agriturismi<\/em> for weekend escapes, a night away from the city or a glorious meal in the countryside. Not surprisingly, all the local ingredients are cultivated and produced on site using organic farming techniques.<\/p>\r\n

Where are agriturismi located?<\/strong><\/h5>\r\n

There are over 5,000 agriturismi<\/em> <\/strong>in Italy. Most are set in the countryside, with some not far from city centers like Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome, and Naples . As an added bonus, you can find them all over the country, including the islands. For everything stated above, they are a wonderful alternative to consider in the age of Covid-19…and after.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Agriturismi<\/em> are as abundant as hotels in Italy, though they are often more remote and offer far fewer rooms than hotels. Thus, knowing where they are, how to get there, what is nearby and other essential components for travel are essential. Some agriturismi<\/em> may have only 2-3 rooms while others may have 10-15. Amenities also vary from basic to super luxurious. Some may not have any rooms at all and instead offer only a restaurant or food experiences.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

Yet, one thing runs consistent with every property we have visited in the past fifteen years:<\/strong> It’s truly an Italian experience staying in an agriturismo and a chance to meet with community members, most of whom have special insight into their local experience.<\/p>\r\n

While it’s a great opportunity to venture into the Italian countryside to enjoy some ‘isolation’ and ‘relaxation’ – it’s also a great time to meet the owners and often times their families, friends and other guests who share the same values as you.
